01. Change Your Address With The Post Office
When letting the Post Office know you’ll be updating your mailing address you have two options:
- Change your address on line by visiting USPS.com/Move.
- Visit your local Post Office and requesting a Mover’s Guide packet.
While updating your address details online maybe the quicker and more convenient option, this option costs $1.05 and requires a credit or debit card and valid email address. With both available, you can complete the process in minutes and a confirmation email will immediately be sent your way.
Alternatively you can visit the post office and obtain a movers packet free of charge. Inside the packet will be a PS Form 3575. Fill out this form then give it to a postal worker behind the counter or drop it into the mail slot inside the post office. From there, you will receive a letter confirming your change within 5 business days.
02. Transfer/Set Up You Utilities
Transferring or setting up your utilities is a process you want to set up as soon as possible. This is especially true if you are moving to a single family home or condo where the utilities setup may be more of your own responsibility. The following are a list of utilities you may be responsible for setting up for your new residence:
If you are renting, look over your lease agreement or contact your landlord or property, manager to see which utilities you are responsible for. It is common for the owner to have the Republican Services account in their own name. Also some utilities may be bundled into your rental costs.
03. Explore Your New Neighborhood
Once you’re moved in to your new residence, take a day to get familiar with your new community. Knowing where your local grocery and convenience store is will make every day life much easier. More importantly, knowing where your closest hospital and/or urgent care office is is equally as important. In the event of a emergency, you would want to know a primary and secondary route to your nearest hospital.
